Saint Lawrence Church - Door
00:00 / 01:04
Take a moment to study the extraordinary bronze doors in front of you. These doors are the work of Giacomo Manzù, one of Italy's most celebrated sculptors of the twentieth century. The theme of the door is deceptively simple: War and Peace. But nothing about their execution is simple at all. Start by looking up at the semicircular arch above the doors. This is the ""Peace"" panel, and it radiates warmth. You can see a mother reclining, lifting a baby joyfully into the air, while a father stands close by. In the background, a young man runs freely with a flowing cloth trailing behind him, a symbol of liberty and the carefree movement of a society living without fear. It's an image of everyday happiness, of life as it should be. Now lower your gaze to the main door panels below, and the mood shifts dramatically. This is ""War,"" and Manzù holds nothing back. Look closely and you'll see a soldier wielding a knife against another figure. Nearby, a child lies crying and abandoned on the ground, an image many art historians connect to the biblical Massacre of the Innocents. Perhaps most haunting of all is a woman reaching desperately toward a hanging man, a scene that evokes the personal tragedies of occupation and execution. These images aren't abstract. They are rooted in what happened right here. When German bombers obliterated Rotterdam's city center in a devastating aerial bombardment. Nearly everything was destroyed. This church, Sint-Laurenskerk, was one of the few medieval structures left standing, though it was severely damaged. When you look at those war panels, you're seeing the memory of that day cast permanently in bronze. Now, notice something remarkable between the two sections. A heavy, realistic bronze cloth hangs draped over the center of the door, bridging the scenes of war below and peace above. This sculpted drapery is one of the most discussed features of the entire work. It represents the veil between destruction and harmony, a reminder that the boundary separating the two is far thinner and more fragile than we might like to believe. There's a fascinating backstory to these doors as well. Manzù was no stranger to sacred commissions. He also designed the famous Door of Death for St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. But he was a committed Marxist, and when he accepted this project, he made one condition clear: he would not be forced to include traditional religious imagery. He wanted these doors to speak to the universal human experience of Rotterdam's citizens, not to a strictly church audience. The result is a work that feels deeply personal and secular, even as it stands at the threshold of a house of worship. Entry to the church is paid, feel free to enter if you wish to explore the church. We are now moving from the spiritual heart of old Rotterdam to the vibrant, colorful heart of the new city. Cross over toward the massive horseshoe-shaped building.
