Welcome to the Long Walk, one of Windsor's most iconic and picturesque landmarks. This magnificent tree-lined avenue stretches for three miles from Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse statue, offering stunning views and a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the town. Walk down a short stretch of this path as you listen to the commentary. The Long Walk was created in the late seventeenth century during the reign of King Charles the second. It was originally designed as a grand approach to Windsor Castle, showcasing the natural beauty of Windsor Great Park. The avenue was flanked by rows of majestic elms and later replaced by chestnut trees, creating a breathtaking canopy that changes with the seasons. Take in the panoramic views of Windsor Castle behind you. This pathway has been the site of numerous royal processions, including the wedding procession of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in two thousand eighteen. The couple rode up this very avenue in a horse-drawn carriage, greeted by cheering crowds, before heading into the castle for their reception. At the far end of the Long Walk, you'll find the Copper Horse, a grand statue of King George the third on horseback. Erected in eighteen hundred and thirty-one, this statue sits atop Snow Hill, offering one of the best vantage points in Windsor. Legend has it that Henry the eighth sat on Snow Hill, anxiously awaiting news of Anne Boleyn's execution. The Long Walk also offers a chance to encounter some of Windsor Great Park's wildlife. The park is home to a herd of over five hundred wild deer, descendants of the deer once hunted by royalty. If you're lucky, you might spot these graceful animals grazing in the meadows or wandering near the path. I have spotted them a few times in a large herd near the base of the hill near the Copper Horse as you can see from the image above. But if you decide to make your way there, be warned that the journey there and back will take a really long time, usually more than two hours. The landscape is deceptive and you may find that there is a reason that it is called the Long Walk! Once you are done, head back towards Windsor town center to explore Peascod Street, the main shopping area. We will be retracing our steps towards the castle. Follow the map on the app to get there.
