In sixteen hundred eighty-five, in the heart of a bustling craftsmen's district in Aix-en-Provence, a new fountain was unveiled at the intersection of rue des Chapeliers and rue des Bagniers. Known as the Bagniers Fountain, it was a boon to the local residents, supplying them with hot water and quickly becoming a cherished fixture in the neighborhood. However, by seventeen hundred and fifty-nine, the increase in traffic necessitated changes. The fountain, now an obstacle, needed to be moved. The task fell to the Vallons, a father-and-son team, who ingeniously relocated the fountain against a nearby wall to clear the road. This move, though practical, came with a downside: the fountain lost its supply of hot water, which was redirected to the Mossy Fountain which we will visit soon. Despite this loss, the Bagniers Fountain retained its charm. Today, only the gracefully rounded basin remains original, while the rest has been renovated. The fountain's distinctive gargoyles, depicting a father and son with plump cheeks, are thoughtfully placed at a height that prevents splashing passers-by, adding a touch of whimsy and practicality. In nineteen hundred and twenty-six, the unused space in the fountain's upper part caught the eye of Ambroise Vollard, a renowned art dealer and friend of Paul Cézanne. Vollard sought to honor the great painter by installing a medallion with Cézanne's portrait, surrounded by a wreath of flowers and fruit. Today, the Bagniers Fountain is affectionately known as the ""Cézanne Fountain.
