We are now at Kotor's main town square, where we will be exploring some of the important historical landmarks of Kotor. But first, are you wondering why this square is called the Square of Arms? Well, during Venetian times, this area focused on making and storing weapons. Kotor, a fortified city, was a prized location due to its strategic position on the Adriatic, so it had to be well-prepared for attacks from foreign powers like the Ottoman Empire. This square was where soldiers gathered to arm themselves and defend the city, which is how it acquired its name. Now, it’s time to learn about some of the historical monuments present in the square. First is the Clock Tower. This seventeenth-century clock tower is one of the most recognizable and photographed landmarks of Kotor. The first thing you will notice about this building is that it looks slightly tilted, reminding you of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, this tower was not built with that intention. The reason for its tilt is due to not one but two earthquakes. The first earthquake left the tower leaning towards the sea, and although it was returned to its original position, the second earthquake in the late nineteenth century caused it to lean again and it is now left that way and adds to the charm of this square. You’ll also notice the Duke’s Palace opposite to the clock tower. The Duke’s Palace served as the residence for Kotor’s leaders during Venetian rule, symbolizing the city’s political and administrative importance. Meanwhile, Napoleon’s Theatre on the north end of the square was added in the early nineteenth century when Kotor was under French rule, showing how each new influence left its mark on the city’s landscape. In its day, the theater was a major cultural hub where the people of Kotor enjoyed performances and celebrated their heritage and this was one of the first theaters in Montenegro.
