The Mathematical Bridge, also known as the Wooden Bridge, spans the River Cam and connects the two halves of Queen's College. The bridge's name may evoke thoughts of complex mathematical principles, but its design is actually based on an ingenious engineering technique called tangential trusses. Built in seventeen hundred and forty-nine, the bridge was originally constructed using only straight timbers without the need for bolts or nails which was and remains till date a remarkable feat of engineering. The bridge's design is often falsely attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, who was renowned for his mathematical and scientific contributions. According to the story, the bridge was constructed by students of the University of Cambridge under Newton's guidance. However, this tale is purely a myth, as Newton passed away long before the bridge was built. Over the years, the Mathematical Bridge has undergone multiple reconstructions due to wear and tear, but each time it has been faithfully restored to its original design. Today, the bridge stands as a picturesque landmark, offering fantastic photo opportunities, especially when punts gracefully glide underneath.
