We are now at Peterskirche, or St. Peter's Church, affectionately known by locals as "Old Pete." This church dates back to the twelfth century and is situated on what was once the grounds of an eighth-century monastery, the earliest known settlement in this area. These are the same monks, whom we discussed in our introduction whose settlement gave Munich its name where München translates to "home of the monks". The original structure was Romanesque, but after a devastating fire in the fourteenth century, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. Over time, elements of Baroque and Rococo were added, resulting in the eclectic and richly decorated church you see today. Before moving inside, take a step back and take a look at the church’s observation tower. No one knows exactly why there are 8 clocks on it - one explanation could be that the upper clocks were put up later because the neighbouring houses were built higher over time and people wanted to make sure that they could still read the time. The comedian Karl Valentin remarked that this was so that eight people can look at the clock at the same time. If you're feeling adventurous, you can climb three hundred and six steps to the top of the tower by paying a small fee. It is a steep climb but on a clear day, the view can be quite rewarding. From the top, you’re treated to a panoramic view of the city, with the Frauenkirche and Rathaus in the foreground and, on a clear day, the majestic Alps in the distance. The tower has several color-coded circles that indicate how visible the Alps are based on the weather conditions. So, if you spot the white circle, it’s a good day to admire those distant peaks. The church is free to enter and inside, you can witness a variety of artistic and religious treasures. The high altar is a masterpiece. As we move further inside, you’ll encounter one of the church’s most fascinating and macabre features: the skeleton of St. Munditia, a Christian martyr. It is said that she was beheaded by the Romans for her faith, and her ornate relic box, adorned with jewels, is a striking reminder of her martyrdom. This relic served as a powerful symbol of faith during a time when the veneration of saints was central to religious life. This box was a gift from the pope to the city as a token of gratitude when Munich was one of the last bastions for the Catholic church against the rise of the Protestant Reformation movement.
