We are now at Venice's tallest structure: the Saint Mark's Bell Tower. Originally built in the twelfth century, this iconic tower has served as both a lighthouse and a belfry throughout its history. Isn't it magnificent? What makes the bell tower so significant is not just its height—about ninety-nine meters—but the rich history it carries with it. In its early days, the tower housed five bells, each with its own purpose. The largest bell marked the start and end of the workday, while others rang at midday or summoned the Venetian Senate and Grand Council to meetings. The smallest bell had a much more somber role, as it rang to announce an impending execution. In the sixteenth century, Galileo Galilei climbed the tower to showcase his telescope to the Doge of Venice, a moment that changed the course of science. A plaque marking this extraordinary event can still be found at the top of the bell tower. However, the most dramatic moment in the tower's history occurred in the year nineteen hundred and two, when it suddenly collapsed right after giving a warning bell. The debris crashed down into the piazza below. Miraculously, no one was killed or even injured. Venice had lost one of its most iconic landmarks, but the city vowed to rebuild it exactly as it had been. Remarkably, in just a few years, the tower was restored, standing tall once again, safer and sturdier than ever! Today, reaching the top of the tower is a breeze. Unlike other bell towers that require climbing narrow, steep staircases, this one offers an elevator ride, so you can reach the top in comfort and enjoy stunning views of Venice. There is a fee to take the elevator, and the tower is open from 9 am to 8:45 pm every day. From the top, you can see the domes of Saint Mark's Basilica, the winding canals, and the distant lagoon. If you’re lucky and the weather’s clear, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking three hundred and sixty-degree panorama of the city and beyond. Now, let's take a moment to admire the intricate details of the tower. At its base, you’ll find the elegant loggia, designed by the architect Jacopo Sansovino in the sixteenth century. The tower’s walls are also adorned with four reliefs, each symbolizing Venice. Don’t forget to look for the statue of Archangel Gabriel at the top, with its enormous wings turning with the wind.
