Before we enter the cathedral, take a moment to look up at the large carved scene above the doorway. It tells the story of the Virgin Mary through a sequence of scenes, moving from Earth to Heaven. Let’s read it from the bottom upwards. Start by looking along the bottom level. On the far left, you’ll see the Nativity. Mary is seated behind the manger, gently watching over the newborn Christ. In front of the crib, the Three Magi kneel in adoration, offering their gifts. You can identify them by their flowing robes and crowns. It’s a quiet moment, yet full of meaning — the beginning of Christ’s life on Earth and the start of Mary’s role in the story of salvation. Now shift your gaze to the bottom right. Here, the tone changes completely. This is the Lamentation or Entombment of Christ. His lifeless body is laid out on a stone slab, surrounded by mourners. Mary appears again, this time as the Sorrowful Mother, veiled and grieving. This scene blends the removal from the cross, the mourning, and the preparation for burial. Finally, raise your eyes to the upper register. This is the heavenly scene: the Coronation of the Virgin. Christ sits on the right, Mary on the left, both enthroned. Christ places a crown on Mary’s head while angels surround them. It marks her triumph after her earthly sorrows — from mother of Christ to Queen of Heaven. Together, these scenes guide you from birth, to loss, to glory — a full journey of faith carved in stone above the doors of the cathedral. Let us now move to the main entrance of the cathedral. You can now step inside the cathedral from the main entrance. I will share the story shown on the east side rose window in the cathedral.
