This is a sight that has charmed visitors for centuries: the Church of Saint Anne. With its intricate red-brick facade, elegant spires and delicate detailing, it is often considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Baltics. This church is so stunning that it inspired a famous legend. The story goes that when Napoleon Bonaparte marched through Vilnius, he was so utterly enchanted by Saint Anne’s beauty that he said he wished he could carry it back to Paris in the palm of his hand. Thankfully for us, that didn’t happen. What makes the church so unique is its construction. Unlike many Gothic churches built from stone, this one uses an astonishing 33 different types of clay bricks! Look closely at the facade and you will see that the varying shades of red brick create a visually intricate pattern. The interior is relatively simple compared to its ornate exterior. Now, shift your gaze just next door to the Bernardine Church, and you’ll see a very different kind of majesty. It's much larger and plainer on the outside, but don’t underestimate it. This was once one of the most important churches in the city. But this isn't just a church - it's a fortress. Look at those thick walls, and the defensive features. During times of war, this church served as a refuge for the city's population and served many other purposes over the centuries. Swedish forces used it as a garrison, Russian troops turned it into a warehouse and the French army stabled horses here during Napoleon's retreat. But each occupying force recognized that this building was secure. Take in the beautiful contrast between the delicate Saint Anne's and the imposing Bernardine Church before we move on. We will now cross the Vilnia River and step into a truly unique part of Vilnius: the self-declared Republic of Užupis. As you walk take in the neighborhood itself and keep your eyes peeled for the statue of an angel atop a pedestal which is very close to the stop I’ve marked on the map.
