Let's begin our tour from the heart of Manchester at Piccadilly Gardens. It’s interesting how the Gardens reflect Manchester itself—always evolving. Once a serene green space surrounded by residential homes in the eighteenth century, the Gardens evolved alongside the city’s industrial boom in the nineteenth century reflecting Manchester’s rapid economic growth. There has also been widespread debate about the many features of these gardens. The Gardens are home to some interesting monuments. If you walk towards the top end of Market Street, you’ll notice Queen Victoria's statue. Just to the left, you’ll find one of the largest monuments in the city, dedicated to Sir Robert Peel. Sir Robert Peel was a British Conservative statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice. He is most famous for founding the modern police force. If you have ever wondered why police constables in the UK are referred to as ""Peelers"" or ""bobbies,"" it is because they were nicknamed after Sir Robert Peel! He also repealed corn laws and was seen as a champion of free trade. The statue, though, had its share of controversy as Robert Peel is believed to have been a proponent of slavery and racism. Another controversial monument is the ""Piccadilly Wall,"" —a large concrete partition designed by architect Tadao Ando. When it was first put up, it sparked a lot of debate, and many people didn’t like how it disrupted the open space. In two thousad and twenty, part of it was taken down as part of a redevelopment project, which stirred even more debate, especially from groups like The twentieth Century Society. The fountains, popular in the summer, have faced challenges, including issues with broken glass. Additionally, One Piccadilly Gardens, a prominent structure in the skyline, has been a source of controversy for the sale of public land to private enterprise and its impact on sunlight in the area. Despite this, Piccadilly Gardens remains a popular spot. It’s still an area where people come to relax, take in the surroundings, and admire the city’s architecture.
