Statue of King Frederik the Fifth
00:00 / 01:04
At the very center of Amalienborg stands King Frederik the fifth on horseback, anchoring the entire palace complex around him. The statue was completed in the eighteenth century and is widely considered one of the finest equestrian monuments in Europe. It was created by the French sculptor Jacques-François-Joseph Saly, who spent more than twenty years perfecting it. In fact, the project took so long that Frederik the Fifth never lived to see the finished statue. Frederik is shown calm and composed, sitting confidently on a prancing horse. There’s no battle scene here, no raised sword. Instead, the king wears classical armor and a flowing sash, clearly inspired by Roman imperial statues—especially the famous statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome. Here is something interesting: everyone knows the East India Company from England. But before the British ever dominated trade in India, there was another, smaller but surprisingly ambitious player: the Danish East India Company. It was chartered by King Christian the Fourth, driven by the same dream that fueled every European power of the time—control of Asian trade. Spices, textiles, and later tea were the real prizes. After a difficult voyage and early setbacks in Ceylon, modern-day Sri Lanka, the Danes struck a deal on the Indian mainland. They secured a place in South India and permission to trade in a powerful Indian kingdom. Their network stretched across South India and beyond, trading cotton, spices, silk, and eventually tea. And here’s the twist: during their peak, the Danes—and their Swedish rivals—quietly flooded England with tea. Around ninety percent of it was smuggled in, sold illegally to dodge British taxes, and turned into massive profit. The company rose fast, collapsed under European wars, and finally faded away. But for a century, this small Scandinavian power punched far above its weight in India’s global trade story. But why are we talking about the Danish East India Company here? Well, because the statue in front of you was commissioned by the Danish East India Company.
