You are now looking at the Portal of the Last Judgment, and every level of the tympanum tells part of the story of what Christians believed would happen at the end of time. Start with the lowest level, just above the doorway. Look to the center, where the archangel Michael stands holding a scale with a lamb on one side and a devil on the other. This is the moment of the weighing of souls. On one side of the scale, you can see the tiny, hunched figure of a soul waiting to learn its eternal fate. You can see angels on both sides of Michael blowing trumpets to signal Judgment Day. But look closely to the right of Michael’s scale: a devil is slyly pressing down on the scale with a clawed hand, trying to cheat the result. This small gesture adds a touch of dark humor—and a reminder of the spiritual struggle behind every human life. Now shift your gaze to the left and right. You’ll see the resurrection of the dead. Skeleton-like figures rise from their tombs, called forward by an angel who leads them toward Michael for judgment. Their faces show confusion and awe as they step into the light. Now lift your eyes to the middle band. On the left, you’ll see the serene procession of the saved, clothed in long, flowing robes. An angel guides them gently toward heaven, and you can see the angels above them flying with crowns to be placed on them. If you look to the extreme left, you can see the saved souls in the bosom of Abraham. Scroll the images to see the exact figure. Now look to the right side of this level, where the tortured procession of the damned continues—naked figures twisted in agony as devils drive them onward. Here are the damned, dragged and pushed by devils toward the gaping jaws of hell, carved as a monstrous mouth or fiery furnace. Finally, raise your gaze to the top of the tympanum, the heart of the entire composition. Here you see Christ in Glory, seated as the divine judge. His hands are raised, showing the wounds of the Crucifixion. On one side kneels the Virgin Mary; on the other, John the Baptist—both pleading for mercy on behalf of humanity. Around them, angels hold the instruments of the Passion—the cross, nails, and spear—symbols of Christ’s sacrifice. This entire portal functions as a stone sermon.
