Westgate Tower
00:00 / 01:04
The Westgate Tower is the largest surviving medieval gatehouse in England and a prominent landmark in Canterbury. Standing sixty feet tall, this imposing structure was built in the late thirteen hundreds. Westgate Tower marks the western entrance to the city and is the only one of Canterbury's original seven gates still standing. It is made of local Kentish ragstone and replaced an earlier Roman gate. It has witnessed significant historical events, including the English Civil War when it was used as a prison. It also had some strange customs: During its time as a prison, select prisoners were allowed to beg from passers-by through the bars of the gateway. This practice continued until the early nineteenth century. Today, the tower houses the Westgate Towers Museum, which offers fascinating exhibits on the history of Canterbury and the role of the tower in the city's defense. If you decide to enter by paying the entry fee, you can also explore the prison cells and the stunning views from the rooftop. Next, we’ll stroll through the nearby Westgate Gardens, a beautiful and tranquil spot perfect for a leisurely walk. Follow the map to get there.

An excellent tour of Canterbury which we could do at our own pace, giving us time for lunch and coffee on the way.

Excellent value intro to the city

Easy to download and straightforward to use. An interesting introduction to lots of sights in the city. I did them in a different order than they’d listed, but this was really easy using the map, could just choose to hear the audio in any order very easily.

Great intro to Canterbury

We enjoyed using this self-guided tour to see the main sights of Canterbury. The audio was clear and gave some interesting information. We saw things that we wouldn’t have seen if we had just wandered around on our own. Great that you can go at your own pace and stop for a break when you feel like it.
