Sainte Dévote Corner
00:00 / 01:04
The race start in Monaco is the most important of the F1 calendar. It is almost impossible to overtake at this circuit, so if you get into Sainte Dévote first, there’s a great chance you’re going to win the race. Nico Rosberg, another Monaco resident, mastered this corner during his career with Mercedes. He won this race from pole position in 2013 and 2014 and made it a hat-trick of wins in 2015 after a strategy error cost his teammate Lewis Hamilton the win. Sainte Dévote has seen its fair share of crashes too. Felipe Massa’s 2013 Monaco Grand Prix ended in the Sainte Dévote barriers after a suspension failure, and Max Verstappen had a huge accident here in 2015 whilst trying to overtake the Lotus of Romain Grosjean. In both instances, the drivers were unhurt. One of the most remarkable crashes occurred when Nico Rosberg's car sucked up a drain cover, which then hit Jenson Button's car. If you look for a square drain cover just after the turn, that’s the one that flew out of the ground and struck Button's car. The reason the drain cover flew out is due to Bernoulli's principle. Formula 1 cars have very low ground clearance, and when they travel at high speeds, the air pressure beneath the car drops below normal atmospheric pressure, while the air pressure under the drain cover remains at standard levels. This pressure difference causes the drain cover to be sucked up from the road and launched into the air. If you look up at the hill from Sainte Dévote, you will be able to see the modest Sainte Dévote Chapel, dedicated to Monaco’s patron saint. A chapel has been located in this spot since the 11th century, and the Monegasque Royal Family lights a fire here each year. We’re heading up the hill to Beau Rivage next.
