Sheesh Mahal or Diwan-e-Khas
00:00 / 01:04
To reach Sheesh Mahal, take left once you exit Ganesh Pol. You will find a beautiful pavilion-like building structure on your left. Move towards this building. There are photos on the app which shows you how it looks. Sheesh Mahal is considered a “Jewel in the crown” of this fort. Diwan-e-Khaas means a place where the king would meet only close and important people. Walking into the Sheesh Mahal is restricted but you can look inside from three sides. This is an effort to preserve this masterpiece from further damages The Sheesh Mahal, or Mirror Palace, is a marvel of architecture. It consists of millions of small mirrors which were imported from Belgium, and the intricate patterns create a magical effect when illuminated. During the night these mirrors reflect the light of a torch or wick, resembling stars in the sky. There is a legend that the Sheesh Mahal was built because of a queen who wanted to sleep under the stars. Since it was not safe for her to sleep outside, the king had this hall built, where the reflections of candles resembled twinkling stars. I don’t know if that particular story is true but this technique of mirror work on walls and ceilings was popular during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The first specimen of Sheesh Mahal was created in the Lahore fort in Pakistan. It is said that a single candle can illuminate the entire hall due to the reflection of light from the mirrors. Nearby is a tiny and very underrated masterpiece of a different sort. Find the flower depicted in the next stop. It is on a pillar
