This remarkable house, built in the sixteenth century in the Rhineland Renaissance style, belonged to the wealthy merchant Anton Burger. Do you know why it's called the House of Heads? . Well, it is because of the one hundred and six grotesque masks decorating the facade. Some smirk in amusement, others stick out their tongues, and still others frown down at the street below. But look up—on the building's gable, you'll spot a charming Alsatian cooper sculpture crafted by the famous artist Auguste Bartholdi. We'll discover more about Bartholdi later on our tour. The statue shows a cooper proudly holding a wine bottle in his left hand and a glass in his right, celebrating the founding of the Colmar Wine Exchange. Why this particular statue? In the late eighteen hundreds, the Colmar Wine Company operated a wine exchange here, and they commissioned Bartholdi to create this artwork as a symbol of the local winemaking tradition. Returning to the House of Heads, you can witness a beautiful three-storey bay window which adorns its facade. The facade is its most striking feature. These heads are a blend of human, grotesque, and mythological faces, each stunningly crafted into the building's pink sandstone exterior. As you gaze up, you'll notice how these heads seem to come alive, each with its own expression and personality. The intricate details give each head a lifelike quality, as if frozen in a moment of expression or emotion. Anton Burger lived in this house until he fled during the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Since then, the building changed hands multiple times until it was acquired by the Wine Exchange. Today, this historic edifice hosts a 5-star hotel and a Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant.
