This is The Big Fish, also known as the Salmon of Knowledge, installed at the eve of the millennium to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan and the surrounding area. The name comes from a famous Irish mythology, the Fenian Cycle. According to the legend, a young boy named Fionn is sent to study under the wise Finnegas, who spends seven years attempting to catch a mystical salmon that gained all the world's wisdom by eating hazelnuts from the Well of Wisdom. When Finnegas finally captures the fish, he instructs Fionn to cook it but warns him not to eat a single bite. However, while turning the fish over the fire, Fionn burns his thumb and instinctively licks it to soothe the pain, accidentally absorbing the salmon's magical insight. Recognizing that Fionn was destined for this gift, Finnegas allows him to finish the meal, and Fionn grows up to be the legendary leader, possessing the unique ability to solve any problem simply by licking his thumb. By placing this wise fish here, where the hidden Farset River meets the Lagan, the city hopes that it will hold the memory of Belfast as it enters a new beginning. Look closely at the scales. You will notice the different depictions on the scales of the fish, including newspaper clippings, views of the city, local industries, and children's art. Each tile is a snapshot of Belfast’s history mixed up to show that in Belfast, the past and present, and the different areas of life are always overlapping. Don’t be surprised if you see people kissing the fish. It is a local tradition to kiss the fish on the mouth for good luck and to gain a bit of that legendary wisdom.
