Stop in the square and take a look around. We are now in the historic neighborhood of Barrio Santa Cruz. Known for its narrow, winding streets, flower-filled patios, and hidden squares, this former Jewish Quarter is a great place to spend a romantic evening. During the Middle Ages, this district was the center of Seville’s Jewish community, thriving under Moorish rule. However, after the Reconquista, the Jews were expelled and the neighborhood underwent a significant transformation. Unfortunately, things got even worse when the Spanish Inquisition came to power and Jews were forced to convert or flee for over 4 centuries. Today, we have less than 200 Jews in the city. This charming square that we are standing on is called Plaza de Doña Elvira. It was once the site of a Jewish cemetery and is named after Doña Elvira, a character in a famous Spanish play. I will tell you a little bit more about the neighbourhood before I let you walk along the lanes to discover it yourself. One of the most famous stories associated with Barrio Santa Cruz is the legend of Susona, the daughter of a wealthy Jewish man who lived here during the Spanish Inquisition. According to the tale, Susona fell in love with a Christian man and betrayed her father’s plans to resist the Inquisition. After her father and family were executed, Susona lived the rest of her life in remorse. Her last request was to have her skull displayed on her house as a warning to others. Keep a lookout for this house as you walk around. A Hidden Gem which is just a couple of minutes away from the square is the. Hospital de los Venerables. You can swipe on the photos to see what it looks like. This is a beautifully preserved Baroque building that once served as a residence for aging priests. It now houses an art gallery featuring works by Sevillian masters, including Diego Velázquez. The layout of Barrio Santa Cruz is not accidental—its labyrinthine streets were designed to provide shade and coolness during Seville’s hot summers. The high walls and narrow alleys also offered protection and privacy, which was vital during tumultuous periods in history. The lanes have been called “kissing lanes” as the closeness of the buildings gives the impression that they are leaning forward to kiss each other. As you wander, take note of the colorful azulejos (ceramic tiles) adorning many buildings. These tiles are a hallmark of Andalusian art and often depict religious scenes or geometric patterns. Many of the homes in this neighborhood have patios filled with flowers and fountains, a tradition dating back to the Moorish era. These patios are often private, but if you are lucky, you will see some that are open to the public. Once you finish taking in this beautiful neighbourhood, follow the map to a museum dedicated to Flamenco!
