William McGonagall was quite famous or rather infamous in his time as one of the worst poets in British history. J K Rowling confessed that there was something irresistible about the idea of a brilliant woman like Minerva McGonagall being a distant relative of the buffoonish McGonagall. It is believed that William McGonagall is related to Minerva McGonagall, through her Muggle father, Robert McGonagall. As you stand near McGonagall’s grave, look through the graveyard’s perimeter to catch a glimpse of George Heriot's School, an imposing and grand building with a strong connection to the Harry Potter series. I don’t recommend making a detour to the site itself as it is challenging to gain admission to look inside the school. But standing here you can look at the impressive exterior! George Heriot's School is said to have inspired the architectural design of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The towering turrets, impressive facades, and overall grandeur of the school bear a striking resemblance to the description of Hogwarts in the books. George Heriot's School is also divided into four houses, which is said to have influenced the idea of the four houses at Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. I imagine that it must be a treat for students at George Heriot's to be living in a real-world version of Hogwarts! From here, let’s head back and move across the road from the graveyard.
