Yes, you heard it right. Not a woman but a hilltop. Henry had married Cunigunde, a Luxembourgish noblewoman, and as a wedding gift, he gave her his estates here in Bamberg. That gift is called the Morgengabe, the ‘morning gift,’ that a husband presents to his wife on the morning after the wedding night. It was her personal financial security. But then Henry became king, and later Holy Roman Emperor, and he had a grand idea. He wanted to turn Bamberg into a second Rome. So Henry asked Cunigunde to give her wedding gift back, so he could found a new diocese here. She agreed, reportedly to the fury of her relatives, who saw a fortune slipping away. Henry built a cathedral in just ten years, founded a monastery for training clergy, and laid out the town on a cross plan with churches at the four compass points, all spread across seven hills, each one crowned by a church or castle. This sounds quite similar to the Holy City of Rome, which is why Bamberg is often nicknamed the “Franconian Rome.” Here's the thing that makes Henry and Cunigunde truly unique. They're the only imperial couple in history where both husband and wife were canonised as saints. They had no children, which the medieval Church interpreted as proof of a chaste, virginal marriage, meaning a holy union devoted entirely to God and the empire. Their faces are carved into doorways, their miracles depicted on tombs, and one legend even credits Cunigunde with saving this city from Allied bombs nine hundred years after her death. But Bamberg isn't just the story of a saintly power couple. It's really the story of two cities forced to share one town. Henry's bishops ruled from the hilltop, known as the Bergstadt. Below them, on an island in the river, the merchants and craftsmen built their own world, the Inselstadt. These two communities spent centuries locked in a power struggle, and that conflict is written into the streets, the buildings, and even the placement of the town hall, which sits on a bridge in the river because neither side would give up land. In the late twentieth century, UNESCO gave this whole thing a World Heritage status, protecting over thirteen hundred listed buildings across three historic districts.
