We are now in the Chiado neighborhood and this is one of its main squares, Largo Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. Look around and you should be able to spot the building that is on the photos tab in the app. This is one of the most photographed tiled buildings in Lisbon and it's easy to see why. Tiled buildings are another defining feature of the city’s charm. The history of these tiles dates back to the thirteenth century, when the Moors introduced this technique. The word azulejo itself derives from the Arabic al-zillij, meaning ""polished stone."" Portugal developed its own distinctive tile-making style and tiles became central to urban architecture, not just for their beauty but also for their functionality, as they helped protect buildings from moisture and heat. You could do an entire walking tour to just see the most beautiful tiled buildings in Lisbon. The facade of this particular tiled building illustrates mythological figures representing Earth, Water, Science, Agriculture, Commerce, and Industry, and at the top is the Eye of Providence. This is the last official stop on our tour. From here, if you wish, you can make your way to Café A Brasileira, one of Lisbon’s most famous and historic cafes, a popular meeting spot for writers, artists, and intellectuals. Founded by two French brothers in seventeen hundred and thirty-two, this is the world's oldest bookstore, as certified by the Guinness World Records.
