You’re now looking at a vibrant stained-glass window known as the Daily Bread Window. It was a generous gift from the staff of the Durham branch of Marks & Spencer, presented to mark the company’s centenary. The window represents the deep connection between the local community and Durham Cathedral. It was crafted by Hartley Wood & Co. in Sunderland, which at the time was one of the oldest glass-making companies in England. The scene it depicts is the Last Supper — but not in the way you might expect. Instead of a literal image of Jesus and his disciples sitting around a table, the artist offers a bird’s-eye view, turning the moment into an imaginative and colourful experience. You’ll notice thirteen soft, sketch-like circles, each one representing a person at the table. Jesus is typically placed at the head, often as the brightest or most central figure. The colours in the window are rich with meaning. At the top, blue suggests the sky and the heavenly realm, while green at the bottom represents the earth and human life. Surrounding the scene is a border of purple, a colour long associated with royalty and spirituality. Through the middle of the window flows a bold red, symbolizing the blood of Jesus and the sacrifice he made. And then there are the small yellow dots scattered on the table — these aren't random. They represent broken bread, symbolizing the Body of Christ, which is at the heart of the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. If you look closely, you might spot one figure that feels slightly distant, less defined than the others. It’s thought to be Judas, shown as stepping back or turning away from the group — a quiet but powerful nod to his betrayal. After you’ve finished looking at the window, turn toward the Nave and look down. You’ll see a line of black marble on the floor, right in front of the font. It’s hard to miss.
