This small Gothic church is known as Wasserkirche, and its name means the Water Church. It is one of the oldest sacred sites in Zurich, and the story attached to it has survived for more than two thousand years because it is simply too strange to forget. According to legend, this island was an execution site during the Roman period. Two Christian converts, a brother and sister named Felix and Regula, along with their servant Exuperantius, were brought here and beheaded for refusing to renounce their faith. The Romans expected them to die, and they did, but not immediately. First, they stood up, picked up their severed heads, held them in their arms, and began to walk. They walked away from the water, up through the streets of the settlement, step by step, until they reached higher ground. There they prayed, laid themselves down, and died. The spot where they collapsed is where the large twin-towered church you can see from here was later built. We will visit it in a moment. Felix and Regula became Zurich's patron saints. Now, as we walk to the next stop, I want you to pay attention to how many steps it takes you to get there. Before you leave this stop, one more thing. Centuries later, this building was transformed into Zurich's first public library. You can enter if you wish to, as entry is free here. The martyr's stone, the Märtyrerstein, which is believed to be the very stone on which Felix, Regula, and Exuperantius were beheaded, is still preserved in the crypt below.
