City Palace Jaipur
00:00 / 01:04
Journey back in time to the heart of Jaipur at the City Palace, a spectacular royal complex that has been the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur since its founding in seventeen twenty seven. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh the Second, the palace served as the administrative and ceremonial center until nineteen forty nine, and its grandeur has been expanded and embellished by successive rulers over centuries. The City Palace is a stunning blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, with touches of European influence. The iconic pink hue of Jaipur, which extends to parts of the palace, was famously painted in the late 19th century to welcome the Prince of Wales, giving the city its nickname, the "Pink City." If you decide to step inside this sprawling complex by paying the entry fee, you will discover a series of courtyards, pavilions, and galleries. Let me tell you what are the key highlights you can expect inside. The Mubarak Mahal was once a grand reception hall. This building now houses the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh The Second Museum, showcasing a remarkable collection of royal costumes, textiles, and artifacts. Then there is the Chandra Mahal. Known as the "Moon Palace," this seven-story marvel is the current residence of the royal family. Visitors can explore the first floor and, with special access, a few higher levels to take in breathtaking views. The Pritam Niwas Chowk is a magnificent courtyard famous for its four ornate gates, each representing a season and adorned with intricate designs dedicated to Hindu deities. The Peacock Gate, in particular, is a stunning work of art. The palace complex is also home to several museums that house impressive collections of royal artifacts, weaponry, manuscripts, carpets, blue pottery, and priceless Indian artwork, offering a deep dive into the rich history of the Jaipur royals. Now let me talk about another must-visit site in Jaipur.
