Galgewater
00:00 / 01:04
Welcome to Galgewater, a picturesque canal with a rather grim history. The name ""Galgewater"" translates to ""Gallows Water,"" referring to the gallows that once stood here. This area served as a place to hang criminals, sending a clear message to newcomers that crime would not be tolerated. Despite its dark past, this area is now one of the most scenic spots in Leiden, with the historic windmill, Molen de Put, as a backdrop. Speaking of canals, have you ever wondered why there are so many canals in Leiden and in the Netherlands? The earliest canals, known as singels, were created to serve as defensive moats around the city. They provided a barrier against invaders and helped protect the city from attacks. Later, canals became the primary means of transport for trade in Leiden and other Dutch cities. Boats could carry heavy loads, such as building materials, food, and other goods, much more efficiently than overland routes. The Netherlands is also a country largely below sea level, and managing water has always been a concern. Canals helped control the flow of water, prevent flooding, and drain swamps to create arable land. Today, canals add to the aesthetic beauty of these cities. Canal tours are a major draw for visitors and you can spot locals enjoying boating, kayaking, and other water-based activities. Take a moment to enjoy the view and perhaps snap some photos as you walk along the canal. Then, look across the canal and you will see a distinctive building. You can swipe on the photos on the app to see which building I’m talking about. Once you spot it, listen to the next stop.

Udana wycieczka bez przewodnika...

1 lipca 2025
Możesz swobodnie zarządzać swoim czasem i zrobić przerwę, kiedy chcesz. Mogę ją polecić z pełnym przekonaniem.

Łatwy do słuchania audioprzewodnik do zwiedzania Leiden we własnym tempie.
