Corrie ten Boom House
00:00 / 01:04
Stop in front of this narrow house and look at the shopfront. This was a watchmaker's shop, and the family name Ten Boom is still on the facade. Hannie Schaft fought the occupation with a pistol. The family who lived above this shop fought it with a wall. Casper ten Boom was a watchmaker who lived here with his daughters, Corrie and Betsie. They were devout Christians, and during the war, they turned their home into a hub of the resistance. People in danger came through their door, and an estimated eight hundred Jews and other refugees passed through this family's care. Now look up, all the way to the top of the house. Up there was Corrie's bedroom, and in it the family had a false wall built, with a narrow hiding place behind it. When a raid came, the people sheltering here could slip behind that wall and disappear. Then, someone betrayed them. An informant tipped off the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police. They came to the house, searched it, and arrested the family. But they never found the hiding place. Six people were inside that tiny space while the house was searched. They stayed hidden for about two days, and then they escaped. The family paid for it. Casper died within days in the prison at Scheveningen. Betsie died in Ravensbrück, a Nazi concentration camp for women in Germany. Corrie survived, and after the war, she told their story in a book called The Hiding Place. The house is now a museum, and the hiding place can still be seen. There is no entry fee here, but the museum relies on voluntary donations. Also, the tours are timed, and only twelve people are allowed to enter at a time. So, if you wish to explore the house, I recommend you make a reservation online on the museum's official website. When you're ready, follow the map to the city hall.
