Modiste
00:00 / 01:04
Dearest listeners, what is a well-to-do lady without a proper wardrobe? And what is a wardrobe without a visit to the finest modiste in town? Oh yes, the dressmaker to the ton, Madame Delacroix, knows more than just the latest trends in silks and satins. The threads she weaves are not merely cloth, but tales of the scandalous lives of London’s elite. The Abbey Deli in front of you was used as a filming location for the Modiste, the elegant dress shop where the high-society women of Bridgerton come to gossip while Madame Delacroix worked her magic on their gowns. Take a look at the pictures and you'll notice how the windows here match the ones from the show. Now, as they say, when the ladies of the ton have too much time on their hands, gossip flows like wine. And what better place for it than in the private corners of a fitting room? You might remember one of these moments from the series when Lady Bridgerton used one of her fittings to quietly slip some crucial information to Madame Delacroix. It was about Nigel Berbrooke, the scandalous suitor. Lady Bridgerton made sure that word about his illegitimate child spread just enough to save Daphne from marrying him. Dresses and secrets—it’s all part of the fabric of the ton. Speaking of fabrics and costumes, did you know that there were more than seven and a half thousand costume pieces designed for just the first season of the show? The leading lady Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, had a whopping one hundred and four costume changes. You might have noticed, the fashion in Bridgerton is an interpretation of what people would have been wearing during the Regency era, but with a contemporary upgrade. The Featherington family's floral prints in bright pinks, yellows, and oranges are definitely more modern, and the heavy jewel embellishments on the gowns are more extravagant than they would have been in the actual time period. While much of the hairstyle and costume design harks back to the Regency era, many creative choices for key characters span different decades. For instance, Daphne’s curled bangs were inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s iconic look in War and Peace, and Queen Charlotte’s Afro in the series was based on Beyoncé’s style in Austin Powers: Goldmember. Our next stop is the door with a triangular pediment above it. You can find it just beside the Modiste.

Along the way, we shall pay a visit to the modiste for a dress fitting, stroll through a lively market, and of course, call upon none other than the Featheringtons and the indomitable Lady Danbury herself. And worry not, dear friend, for I shall ensure we uncover every secret, every whispered intrigue, as we explore Bath’s many filming locations for the Bridgerton series.
